Early Life and Education
Vladimir Sergeyevich Kim was born on October 29, 1960, in Myrzakent, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union. He is of Korean descent. His family's history includes relocation to Kazakhstan during the Stalin era. Kim graduated from the Kazakh Leading Academy of Architecture and Civil Engineering in 1982 with a degree in civil engineering. He furthered his education by earning an MBA and a PhD in business and administrative management from John F. Kennedy University in California in 1998.
Rise to Success
Kim's career took a pivotal turn in 1995 when he joined Zhezkazgantsvetmet JSC, which was the core subsidiary of Kazakhmys at the time. In 2000, he was elected chairman of the board of directors of Zhezkazgantsvetmet. His influence grew as he became Chairman of Kazakhmys upon its listing on the London Stock Exchange in October 2005. He stepped down as chairman in May 2013, becoming a non-executive director, but remained a major shareholder in KAZ Minerals PLC, a mining company.
