He pursued his medical studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, completing them in 1971. He earned his doctorate and medical license in 1972. From 1971 to 1977, he specialized in surgery and vascular surgery.
Rise to Success
Helmig's career took off when he started as a vascular surgeon in Klinik Oberwald in Grebenhain in 1977. In 1987, he founded Hospitalgesellschaft Dr. Helmig GmbH, which became the foundation for his later hospital group. He then co-founded the Asklepios Kliniken Group with Bernard Broermann in 1987, but separated in 1994. He later renamed his company Helios Kliniken in 1995. From 1994 to 1999, he was the managing partner of Helios Kliniken. In 2000, he withdrew from the operational business. In 2005, he sold Helios to Fresenius for approximately $2 billion. After selling Helios, he established ATON GmbH, which manages the Helmig family's wealth.
Key Business Strategies
Helmig's strategy involved developing and expanding private hospital chains, focusing on high-quality care and operational efficiency. He strategically acquired hospitals and developed new facilities to grow Helios Kliniken into one of Germany's largest private hospital operators. ATON GmbH, the family's investment company, has invested in various sectors, including engineering, mining, medical technology, and aviation. Helmig's approach includes long-term wealth accumulation through investments in innovative companies.

Helmig is known for his philanthropic endeavors. In 2013, he donated approximately $3 million to the community of Grebenhain, where he resided since 1977. He requested the community not to take on new debt in the following three years, except for infrastructure projects. In November 2015, he donated €200,000 to the FDP political party, and in early 2017, he made another donation of €300,000 to the same party.
