He spent his childhood in Trier and went on to study medicine at the University of Freiburg and Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf from 1965 to 1971. He earned his medical degree in 1971 and specialized in surgery/vascular surgery. He worked as a vascular surgeon at the Oberwald Clinic in Grebenhain starting in 1977.
