Early Life
Tsai Eng-meng was born in Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1957. His father, Tsai A-Shi, started a canned fish business in 1962, which laid the groundwork for the family's future ventures. Tsai attended Banqiao Senior High School, but he dropped out at 19.
Rise to Success
Tsai entered the family business, I Lan Foods Industrial Co., in 1976 and became general manager. He launched the Wangzai brand in 1979 and developed Want Want Senbei rice crackers in 1983, which became a core snack offering. In 1987, he succeeded his father as the chairman of Want Want. Under his leadership, the company expanded into the Chinese market and became a major player in the food industry. He also invested in hotels, financial services, and media outlets, including the China Times newspaper and China Television Co.
Key Business Strategies
Tsai focused on expanding Want Want's presence in China, capitalizing on the country's vast consumer market. He introduced strategic product innovations, particularly rice-based snacks. He moved production facilities to China in 1992. Want Want China's flagship products include Hot-Kid milk and Want Want rice crackers, which are market leaders.
