Nayar's career began in 1993 with Kotak Mahindra Group after leaving her previous consultant job. She became the head of the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) team and later opened institutional equities offices in London and New York City. In 2005, she became the Managing Director of Kotak Mahindra Capital, the investment banking unit. At the age of 50, Nayar made a significant career shift and founded Nykaa in April 2012, investing $2 million of her own money.
