Early Life
Weili Dai was born in Shanghai, China, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a degree in computer science. During her time at Berkeley, she met her husband, Sehat Sutardja, who was pursuing a doctorate in electrical engineering. Her early life involved semi-professional basketball, which she credits for building her confidence and teamwork skills.
Rise to Success
Dai's career took off when she co-founded Marvell Technology Group in 1995 with her husband, Sehat Sutardja. Marvell quickly rose to prominence as a major player in the semiconductor industry. Dai played a crucial role in directing Marvell's growth, including leading strategic partnerships, and marketing Marvell's technology for use in products across several markets. Dai served as chief operating officer, executive vice president, and general manager of the Communications Business Group at Marvell, as well as corporate secretary and a director on the board.
Key Business Strategies
A key to Marvell's success was Dai's focus on strategic partnerships and understanding market needs. Dai promoted partnerships with the One Laptop Per Child program (OLPC) and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The company expanded to include customers like Seagate Technology and Samsung Electronics and landed on the initial public offering (IPO) on June 26, 2000. In 2006, the company bought Intel's mobile phone chip business, expanding its reach within the tech industry. In 2021, Dai co-founded the semiconductor company Silicon Box.
Philanthropy
Dai is actively involved in philanthropy, supporting various educational and social causes. She has been involved in the board of the disaster relief organization, Give2Asia. Her contributions have also extended to promoting diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. The Sutardja Dai Hall at her alma mater, UC Berkeley, was named for Dai along with her husband Sehat Sutardja, and Pantas Sutardja.
