Early Life and Education
Mario Verrocchi was born in Melbourne, Australia, on July 30, 1957. Initially studying science, he later transitioned to law before ultimately pursuing a career in pharmacy. A summer trip to Adelaide led him to consider pharmacy, and he secured a place at the South Australian Institute of Technology (now UniSA). He graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of South Australia.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Verrocchi began his career as a trainee under Jack and Sam Gance, pharmacy owners. In 1982, he joined the Gance brothers' pharmacy group. Together, they established MyChemist in 1997 and created the Chemist Warehouse chain in 2000. Chemist Warehouse quickly became known for its large, discount-driven pharmacies.
Key Business Strategies
Verrocchi's success is attributed to a strong retail instinct and a willingness to embrace challenges. The Chemist Warehouse model focused on competitive pricing and a wide selection of products. Verrocchi played a key role in merchandising and supplier relationships, which contributed to the company's growth. He also secured exclusive deals and managed a vast inventory.
Merger with Sigma Healthcare
In 2025, Chemist Warehouse merged with Sigma Healthcare, creating one of Australia's largest pharmacy chains and wholesalers. Verrocchi, along with Jack and Sam Gance, is a major shareholder in the merged entity. The merger resulted in increased wealth for the founders.
Recent Developments
In October 2025, Verrocchi became a major shareholder in HMC Capital, an asset management firm. In 2020, he purchased a seaside mansion.
