Early Life
John Andrew Henry Forrest, known as Andrew or "Twiggy," was born on November 18, 1961, in Perth, Western Australia. He grew up on the remote Minderoo cattle station, which his family had managed since 1878. As a child, he attended the School of the Air and various schools in Perth, including Christ Church Grammar School and Hale School. He studied economics and politics at the University of Western Australia.
Rise to Success
Forrest began his career in finance, working as a stockbroker. He founded Anaconda Nickel in 1994, later known as Minara Resources. His most significant achievement came in 2003 when he acquired Allied Mining and Processing, renaming it Fortescue Metals Group (FMG). Under his leadership, FMG became a major player in the iron ore industry, challenging established giants. Forrest served as the CEO of FMG and is currently the Executive Chairman. Through his private company, The Metal Group, he remains a major shareholder of FMG. He is also the founder and chairman of Tattarang, a holding company for the Forrest family's private business interests.
Key Business Strategies
Forrest is known for his entrepreneurial spirit and aggressive business tactics. He focused on innovative infrastructure development to reduce costs and increase efficiency. He has led the diversification of FMG into "green energy" through the establishment of Fortescue Future Industries. He is also investing in green hydrogen production and renewable energy projects.
Philanthropy
Andrew and his wife, Nicola Forrest, founded the Minderoo Foundation in 2001. The foundation focuses on various initiatives, including ending Indigenous disparity, eliminating modern slavery, supporting education and innovation, early childhood development, cancer research, ocean health, and more. In 2013, they signed The Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes.
