Early Life
John Andrew Henry Forrest, known as Andrew or "Twiggy," was born on November 18, 1961, in Perth, Western Australia. He spent his early years on Minderoo Station, a cattle farm in the Pilbara region. His family has a long history in the area, with his great-great uncle being the first Premier of Western Australia.
Rise to Success
Forrest's career began in finance, but his passion lay in mining. In 2003, he founded Fortescue Metals Group (FMG). Fortescue quickly rose to become a major player in the iron ore market, challenging established mining giants. This rapid ascent was significantly boosted by the discovery of a massive iron ore deposit in 2004. By building integrated infrastructure, including mines, rail, and port facilities, Forrest transformed the company into a global leader in iron ore production.
Key Business Strategies
Fortescue's success stems from a number of strategic moves. Initially, it involved tapping into the vast iron ore resources of the Pilbara region. Furthermore, the company focused on developing efficient infrastructure and forming strong relationships with key markets, particularly China. More recently, Fortescue has begun to diversify into renewable energy and green hydrogen production, spearheaded by Fortescue Future Industries (FFI).
Philanthropy
Forrest, along with his then-wife Nicola, established the Minderoo Foundation in 2001. Their philanthropic efforts have been extensive, with the commitment to give away at least half of their wealth to charity. The Minderoo Foundation focuses on education, Indigenous advancement, ocean health, and the elimination of modern slavery. In 2023, the Forrests made the largest single donation in Australian history with a gift of A$5 billion to the Minderoo Foundation.
