Early Life and Education
Vladimir Olegovich Potanin was born in Moscow, Russia, on January 3, 1961. His father was a trade representative for the USSR, which led to Potanin spending some of his early years in Turkey. He graduated from Moscow School No. 58 with a gold medal and later attended the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), graduating in 1983 with a degree in international economic relations.
Rise to Success
After graduating from MGIMO, Potanin joined the Soviet Department of Trade. In 1990, during the Perestroika era, he founded Interros, a foreign trade association. Through Interros, Potanin engaged in foreign economic consulting. He became instrumental in Russia's privatization, acquiring stakes in several key industries. He played a key role in the creation of the "loans for shares" auctions. Potanin's strategic moves, especially in the acquisition of Norilsk Nickel, significantly contributed to his wealth.
