Early Life and Education
Gennady Nikolayevich Timchenko was born in Leninakan, Armenian SSR (now Gyumri, Armenia) on November 9, 1952. His father was a soldier in the Soviet military. He spent part of his childhood in East Germany and the Ukrainian SSR. Timchenko graduated from the Mechanical Institute of Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) as an electrical engineer in 1976.
Rise to Success
Timchenko began his career in 1977 as an engineer at the Izhorsky plant. In 1988, he became Deputy Director of the state-owned oil company Kirishineftekhimexport. In 1991, he joined Urals Finland Oy, importing Russian oil to Europe. He later became a Finnish citizen. A key moment in his career was co-founding the Gunvor Group in 1999, which became one of the world's largest oil traders. He sold his stake in Gunvor in 2014.
Key Business Strategies
Timchenko's primary strategy has been strategic investment in the energy sector. Through his Volga Group, he holds significant stakes in companies such as Novatek and Sibur. His ability to navigate the complex landscape of the Russian energy market has been instrumental in his success. He has also been involved in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and SKA Saint Petersburg ice hockey club.
Philanthropy
Timchenko, through the Timchenko Foundation, supports various cultural, educational, and sports-related initiatives. The foundation focuses on elderly care, sports, culture, and fostering young talent.
