Early Life
Zeng Yuqun, known professionally as Robin Zeng, was born in 1968 in the rural village of Lankou, Fujian Province, China. His early life coincided with the Cultural Revolution, a period of social and economic disruption. Zeng's family lived in poverty, and agricultural labor was a dominant part of daily life.
Rise to Success
Zeng earned a bachelor's degree in marine engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1989. After working in the electronics sector, he earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999, he co-founded Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), which produced lithium polymer batteries. In 2011, he founded Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) as a spin-off from ATL, focusing on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. CATL has since become the world's largest EV battery manufacturer.
