Early Life and Education
Barry Lam, born Lin Bai-li on April 24, 1949, in Shanghai, China. His family moved to Hong Kong shortly after the Chinese Revolution. Lam's father worked as an accountant. After completing high school, he attended National Taiwan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1970 and a Master of Science in the same field in 1972.
Rise to Success
In 1973, Lam co-founded Kinpo Electronics, a manufacturer of handheld calculators. Under his leadership as president, the company grew to become the largest contract manufacturer of calculators. Recognizing the potential of notebook computers, Lam founded Quanta Computer in 1988. Quanta Computer initially started with capital of less than US$900,000. The company quickly became a major player in the global electronics market. Lam's strategic vision and focus on innovation allowed Quanta to secure significant contracts with major tech companies such as Apple, Dell, and Google.
