Early Life
John Robert Menard Jr. was born on January 22, 1940, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was the eldest of eight children in a devout Catholic family. His father, John Menard Sr., was a university professor, and his mother, Rosemary, was a grade school teacher. Menard attended Eau Claire Regis High School and later graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire with a degree in business and a minor in psychology. He started a small construction business while in college.
Rise to Success
Menard started building pole-frame buildings in 1958 to finance his college education. He opened his first hardware store, Menards Cashway Lumber, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1964. Over the years, Menards grew to become the third-largest home improvement retailer in the United States. The company has expanded to over 340 stores across 15 states, primarily in the Midwest. Menard's success is attributed to his hands-on management style and focus on cost controls, allowing the company to offer competitive prices.
Key Business Strategies
Menard's business strategy has been marked by a tight grip on operations and a focus on keeping costs low. He emphasized internal control and vertical integration. Menard required executives to punch a time clock and was known for his stringent cost controls. Menards was also the first DIY retailer to use a hub-and-spoke distribution system.
Philanthropy
Menard has made significant donations to various organizations, including a $15 million gift to Eau Claire's Luther Midelfort Hospital in 2008 and a $10 million donation to the Eau Claire Area YMCA in 2015. In 2019, the Menard family donated $5 million to the Drug Enforcement and Policy Center at Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law.
