Andreas Maria Maximilian Freiherr von Mauchenheim genannt Bechtolsheim, commonly known as Andy Bechtolsheim, was born on September 30, 1955, in Hängeberg am Ammersee, Bavaria, Germany. Growing up on a farm, he developed an early fascination with electronics, which led him to design an industrial controller at age 16. This early venture provided royalties that supported his education. His family moved to Rome in 1963 and Nonnenhorn on Lake Constance in Germany in 1968.
Rise to Success
Bechtolsheim's academic journey included studies at the Technical University of Munich and Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned a Master's degree. He later pursued a Ph.D. at Stanford University. In 1982, he co-founded Sun Microsystems with Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy, and Bill Joy. He served as the chief hardware designer, pivotal in developing the company's initial product, the Sun-1, and the SPARCstation 1. His early investment of $100,000 in Google in 1998 was a landmark decision, significantly contributing to his wealth. He has also co-founded Arista Networks, a high-speed networking company.
