João Roberto Marinho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on September 16, 1953. He is the third of four children of Roberto Marinho, the founder of Grupo Globo. Marinho's early life was shaped by his family's deep involvement in the media industry, which would later influence his career path.

Marinho began his career in journalism at the "O Globo" newspaper in 1973. He gained experience in various editorial roles before rising through the ranks. In 1982, he became the vice-president of O Globo and, later, vice-president of Rede Globo de Televisão, a position he held until 1997. In 1998, he and his brothers formed the Management Council of Grupo Globo.
