Early Life
Karsanbhai Khodidas Patel was born in 1945 in Ruppur, Gujarat, India, to a farming family. He completed his BSc in Chemistry at age 21. After graduating, he worked as a lab technician at New Cotton Mills in Ahmedabad and later in the Gujarat government's Geology and Mining Department.
Rise to Success
In 1969, Patel started manufacturing and selling detergent powder, named Nirma after his daughter Nirupama, in his backyard. He sold packets door-to-door on his bicycle. His product, priced at ₹3 per kg, was significantly cheaper than competitors. This strategy enabled Nirma to become a leading detergent brand within a decade.
Key Business Strategies
Patel's success stemmed from his focus on cost-effectiveness, quality, and wide distribution. He disrupted the market with an affordable product, establishing Nirma as a leading domestic brand. Patel expanded Nirma into soaps, cosmetics, and personal care products. Nirma's diversified operations include industrial chemicals, cement, and pharmaceuticals through recent acquisitions.
Philanthropy
Patel founded the Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF) in 1994 to promote higher education, which led to the establishment of Nirma University in Ahmedabad. He also established Nirma Labs to support aspiring entrepreneurs.
