Early Life
Karsanbhai Khodidas Patel was born in 1945 in Ruppur, Gujarat, India, into a farmer family. He completed his BSc in Chemistry at the age of 21. Before becoming an entrepreneur, he worked as a lab technician in New Cotton Mills, Ahmedabad, and later in the Geology and Mining Department of the state government.
Rise to Success
In 1969, Patel started manufacturing and selling detergent powder in his backyard, naming the product "Nirma" after his daughter Nirupama. He sold his product door-to-door on his bicycle, offering it at a significantly lower price than competitors. His innovative approach disrupted the market, and Nirma quickly became a household name. Patel’s vision was to provide quality products at affordable prices, targeting the middle and lower-middle-income segments.
