Fernando Roberto Moreira Salles was born in 1946 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a member of one of Brazil's oldest and most influential banking families. His father, Walther Moreira Salles, was the founder of Unibanco and a former ambassador to the United States. Fernando received his education from the Fundação Getulio Vargas.
