Pedro Moreira Salles was born on October 20, 1959, in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Walther Moreira Salles, a prominent banker, diplomat, and politician, who founded Unibanco. The Moreira Salles family's roots in banking trace back to 1924. Pedro attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.
