Early Life
Andre Santos Esteves was born on July 12, 1968, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, into a middle-class family. His parents divorced when he was young, and he was primarily raised by his mother, Tânia, a university professor specializing in educational psychology. Esteves grew up in the Tijuca neighborhood, and faced financial challenges during the economically turbulent 1980s. This upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of self-reliance. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1989.
Rise to Success
Esteves began his career in 1989 as an intern at the investment bank Pactual, where he quickly became involved in the foreign debt trading department. He advanced within the bank, managing M&A deals and IPOs during a period of hyperinflation in Brazil. In 1992, he became a partner at the bank. Esteves played a key role in the sale of Pactual to UBS in 2006 for approximately $2.5 billion, and was appointed CEO and Chairman of UBS Pactual.
Key Business Strategies
In 2008, Esteves left UBS and founded BTG Investments, which later repurchased Pactual from UBS in 2009, rebranding it as BTG Pactual. Under Esteves's leadership, BTG Pactual has expanded its operations in investment banking, asset management, and wealth management, becoming the largest investment bank in Latin America. Esteves is known for cultivating a strong professional culture and expanding BTG Pactual's influence in emerging markets. He is also credited with expanding the firm's operations across commodities trading and international markets.
Philanthropy
Esteves supports education and environmental charities. He is a board member of Conservation International, Inteli, and the Council on Foreign Relations. He founded the Institute of Technology and Leadership (Inteli) with Roberto Sallouti, with the aim of providing higher education for students in the field of Technology. Harvard Business School renovated Baker Hall and renamed it Esteves Hall in his honor.
