Roger Searle Penske was born on February 20, 1937, in Shaker Heights, Ohio. From a young age, Penske was drawn to cars and racing. His father, a successful corporate executive, encouraged his entrepreneurial spirit. Penske attended Lehigh University, where he studied business administration and graduated in 1959.
Rise to Success
Penske began his career as a race car driver in the late 1950s, achieving significant success in various racing series. In 1961, he was named Sports Car Club of America Driver of the Year by Sports Illustrated. However, Penske transitioned from racing to business, opening his first Chevrolet dealership in Philadelphia in 1965. This marked the beginning of his extensive automotive empire. He founded Penske Racing in 1966, which quickly became one of the most successful teams in motorsports history, competing in IndyCar and NASCAR. Penske Corporation, founded in 1969, grew into a large transportation services company with diverse holdings, including Penske Automotive Group and Penske Truck Leasing. In 2019, Penske acquired the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar.
