Early Life
Brian Chesky was born on August 29, 1981, in Niskayuna, New York. His parents were both social workers. Growing up, he developed an early interest in art and design, which later influenced his career. Chesky graduated from Niskayuna High School in 1999 and went on to attend the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in industrial design in 2004. During his time at RISD, he was the captain of the hockey team and developed an interest in bodybuilding.
Rise to Success
After graduating from RISD, Chesky moved to Los Angeles and worked as an industrial designer. He designed toys, guitars, medical equipment, and other items. However, he and his roommate Joe Gebbia co-founded Airbnb in October 2007 when they rented out their apartment during a conference. This marked the beginning of a venture that would transform the hospitality industry. In 2008, they were joined by Nathan Blecharczyk, who became the Chief Technology Officer and the third co-founder. Airbnb initially struggled, but they gained traction by selling custom cereal boxes inspired by presidential candidates. Airbnb officially changed its name from Airbed & Breakfast in March 2009. In December 2020, Airbnb went public, with its share price more than doubling.
