Early Life
Edir Macedo was born on February 18, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was the fourth child in his family. He studied theology, earning degrees and a doctorate in the field. Macedo's early career involved working for the state lottery and as a researcher.
Rise to Success
Macedo's journey took a pivotal turn when he converted to Pentecostalism in 1965. In 1977, he founded the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) in Rio de Janeiro. This church quickly grew, expanding to numerous locations both within Brazil and internationally. In 1989, he bought the television network Record, which propelled his influence in the media and entertainment industry. Record is now the second-largest television network in Brazil.
Key Business Strategies
Macedo's business acumen is evident in his expansion of the UCKG and his acquisition of Record TV. The UCKG has expanded to over 12,000 churches nationwide. He also founded Record News, a 24-hour news channel. His wealth is derived from his media ventures and the UCKG, which is known for its prosperity theology. Macedo also owns a majority stake in the private Brazilian bank Banco Digimais.
Philanthropy
Edir Macedo's philanthropic efforts include initiatives through the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, such as gathering and distributing non-perishable food to those in need. During an event in São Paulo, 700 tons of food were collected and distributed.
