Early Life
Rinat Leonidovych Akhmetov was born on September 21, 1966, in Donetsk, Ukrainian SSR, to a working-class family. His father was a coal miner, and his mother was a shop assistant. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Donetsk National University in 2001.
Rise to Success
Akhmetov entered the business world in the early 1990s, capitalizing on Ukraine's post-Soviet privatization. He founded ARS, a company processing coal into coke, in 1992. His business acumen led to the acquisition of key assets, including the Azovstal steelworks and Khartsyzsk Pipe Plant. In 2000, he founded System Capital Management (SCM), which has become the largest financial and industrial group in Ukraine.
Key Business Strategies
Akhmetov's strategy involved vertical integration in the coking coal mining and steel industry. He established Metinvest International S.A. in Geneva to expand overseas economic activities and attract international financing. He acquired companies with significant debt obligations during the privatization period.
Philanthropy
Akhmetov is known for his philanthropic activities. He founded the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, which focuses on humanitarian aid, and he has provided substantial aid during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has provided millions of food kits and other assistance to those in need. SCM, its businesses, and Shakhtar Football Club have collectively provided $350 million to aid Ukraine, its military, and civilians as of October 2025.
