Early Life
Rinat Leonidovych Akhmetov was born on September 21, 1966, in Donetsk, Ukrainian SSR, into a working-class family of Volga Tatar ethnicity and a practicing Sunni Muslim. His father was a coal miner, and his mother worked as a shop assistant. Akhmetov has an older brother, Ihor, who also worked as a coal miner. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Donetsk National University in 2001.
Rise to Success
Akhmetov's career began in the early 1990s, trading industrial raw materials in post-Soviet Ukraine. He focused on the coking coal, coke, and metal products value chain, founding several trading companies. He then acquired minority stakes in coke and metallurgical plants. In 2000, he founded System Capital Management (SCM). Akhmetov's business strategy led to significant wealth, with SCM becoming the largest financial and industrial group in Ukraine. He also invested heavily in FC Shakhtar Donetsk, transforming the club into a leading Ukrainian football team.
Key Business Strategies
Akhmetov's key business strategies involved vertical integration within the coal mining and steel industries. He expanded internationally, establishing Metinvest International S.A. in Geneva to facilitate overseas economic activity and attract international financing. He acquired controlling interests in key assets and expanded SCM's portfolio to include energy, mining, media, and telecommunications.
Philanthropy
Akhmetov is known for his extensive philanthropic activities through the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, established in 2005 and renamed in 2008. The foundation focuses on healthcare, education, social welfare, and sports development. Since 2014, the foundation has provided 13 million food kits to Ukrainian residents, with aid reaching over 18 million people. The SCM businesses, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation, and Shakhtar Football Club have collectively provided $350 million to aid Ukraine, its military, and civilians as of October 2025.
