Early Life and Education

Jayshree Ullal was born in London, England, on March 27, 1961, to Indian parents. She spent her early childhood in New Delhi, India, where she attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary. She moved to the United States for college, earning a B.S. in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University in 1981 and an M.S. in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University in 1986.

Rise to Success

Ullal began her career at Fairchild Semiconductor and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), designing high-speed memory chips. In 1988, she joined Ungermann-Bass as the director of the internetworking business unit. In 1992, she became vice president of marketing at Crescendo Communications. In 1993, Cisco Systems acquired Crescendo Communications, marking Cisco's first acquisition. Ullal then joined Cisco and worked on the Cisco Catalyst switching business. By 2005, she was Senior Vice President of the Data Center, Switching, and Security Technology Group.
