Ranjan Pai was born in Manipal, Karnataka, India, into a family with a rich legacy in education and healthcare. His grandfather, T.M.A. Pai, founded Kasturba Medical College in 1953, the first private, self-financed medical college in India. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Kasturba Medical College.

After completing his medical degree, Pai pursued a fellowship in hospital administration in the United States, gaining expertise in healthcare management. He began his career as the Managing Director of Melaka Manipal Medical College in Malaysia, where he helped establish it as an international institution. In 2000, he founded MEMG with a modest capital of $200,000 in Bengaluru. Under his leadership, MEMG has transformed Manipal Hospitals into India's largest private hospital chain by bed capacity. His strategic acquisitions and expansions have been key to this growth.

Pai's leadership has focused on operational efficiency, strategic debt management, and leveraging private equity.
