Early Life
Robert B. Rowling was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1953. He earned a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Southern Methodist University. Rowling began his career in the 1970s working for his father's oil company, Tana Oil and Gas.
Rise to Success
In 1989, Texaco acquired Tana Oil and Gas for $476 million, providing the capital for Rowling to establish TRT Holdings. TRT Holdings was founded to manage the family's wealth and diversify their investments. In 1996, Rowling acquired Omni Hotels & Resorts from Wharf Holdings for approximately $500 million, marking a major shift into the hospitality sector. Under his leadership, Omni Hotels expanded, with over 60 properties and 26 golf courses by the 2020s. Rowling also purchased Gold's Gym International in 2004, which he sold in 2020. His strategic approach involves identifying undervalued assets and implementing cost-effective management practices.
