Robert Rowling

Early Life

Robert B. Rowling was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin and a Juris Doctor degree from Southern Methodist University's Dedman School of Law. Rowling's early life was rooted in the oil and gas business, where he began his career.

Rise to Success

Rowling started his career in 1972 working for Tana Oil and Gas, founded by his father, Reese Rowling. In 1989, Texaco acquired Tana for $476 million, providing the capital for Rowling to establish TRT Holdings in 1989. The company then purchased Omni Hotels in 1996, and Gold's Gym in 2004. In 2010, Rowling made a significant investment in the bankrupt Amelia Island Plantation Resort.

Key Business Strategies

Rowling's key business strategy involved diversifying his investments. After selling Tana Oil and Gas, he ventured into the hospitality and fitness industries, acquiring and expanding Omni Hotels and Gold's Gym. He focused on acquiring undervalued assets and transforming them into profitable businesses. Rowling also expanded TRT Holdings' portfolio by purchasing several resorts.

Philanthropy

Rowling is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in supporting educational institutions. In 2013, he donated $25 million to the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. He has also contributed to various other causes.
