Jennifer Natalya Pritzker, born James Nicholas Pritzker on August 13, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, is a member of the prominent Pritzker family. She spent part of her youth in Oberlin, Ohio, which influenced her interest in architecture and preservation. Pritzker enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1974, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division before later becoming an officer through the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) at Loyola University Chicago, where she earned a B.A. in History. She served in the Army Reserves and Illinois Army National Guard, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2001.
