Early Life
Wee Ee Cheong was born in Singapore in 1953 as the eldest son of Wee Cho Yaw, who played a pivotal role in establishing the family's wealth through his leadership at United Overseas Bank (UOB). Wee Cho Yaw transformed UOB into a major regional player. Wee Ee Cheong grew up with his four siblings, experiencing a close-knit family life. He pursued his education at American University in Washington, D.C., earning a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1977, followed by a Master of Arts degree in applied economics in 1979.
Rise to Success
After graduating from American University, Wee Ee Cheong joined UOB in 1979, at the urging of his father. He became deputy chairman in 2000 and CEO in 2007. Under his leadership, UOB has expanded its regional presence across Southeast Asia. Wee's commitment to expansion is crucial with limited opportunities for growth in the small and crowded Singapore market. He has been instrumental in driving UOB's growth and maintaining its strong position in the financial sector.
Key Business Strategies
Wee has focused on extending UOB's roots across Southeast Asia, growing its wholesale and consumer banking businesses, and, more recently, glitzing up its image to attract the younger generation. He emphasizes long-term value over short-term volatility, focusing on regional growth, disciplined risk management, and cultural continuity. Wee is also open to an outsider taking over, and he is growing his “timber” of younger colleagues, which means building the bank's own talent pool of professionals.
Philanthropy
Wee Ee Cheong supports arts and education initiatives, including as a patron of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
