Early Life
Forrest Li Xiaodong was born in Tianjin, China, in either 1977 or 1978. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University and later worked at Motorola Solutions and Corning. Li then pursued an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was inspired by Steve Jobs' commencement speech to become a startup founder. After graduating, he moved to Singapore, facing student loan debt and limited financial resources.
Rise to Success
Li founded Sea Limited in 2009, originally as a digital entertainment company named Garena. The company initially focused on game publishing before diversifying into e-commerce and digital financial services. In 2015, Garena launched Shopee, an e-commerce platform that became a leading online shopping provider in Southeast Asia. Later, the company introduced SeaMoney, offering digital financial services. In May 2017, after raising US$550 million, Garena rebranded as Sea Limited.
Key Business Strategies
Sea Limited's success is built on its strategic diversification and ability to capitalize on the mobile internet revolution in Southeast Asia. The company's key brands include Shopee, Garena, and SeaMoney, which cater to e-commerce, online gaming, and digital financial services, respectively. Sea Limited has attracted investors such as Tencent and has expanded its services to multiple countries.
Philanthropy
Li's commitment to Singapore extends to supporting local football. In 2022, Lion City Sailors FC opened a $10 million training facility as part of his commitment to Singapore football. In March 2021, Sea gave the National University of Singapore its biggest corporate gift ever – a $50 million donation for research and education in its computing school.
