Early Life
Zhang Yong was born in Jianyang, Sichuan, China, around 1970. Growing up in a working-class family, he experienced financial hardships. He started his career as a welder in a tractor factory. Zhang didn't dine in a restaurant until he was 19 years old, which shaped his vision for a better dining experience.
Rise to Success
In 1994, Zhang Yong, along with his wife Shu Ping and a few partners, co-founded the first Haidilao restaurant in Jianyang. The restaurant quickly gained popularity, prioritizing customer service and a welcoming atmosphere. Zhang's focus on employee empowerment, offering profit-sharing and a family-like culture, fueled the company's rapid expansion. Haidilao became the largest hotpot restaurant in town soon after its founding, and it grew to be a global chain.
