Early Life
John Gandel was born in Australia in 1935 to Polish-Jewish immigrants Sam and Fay Gandel. His parents operated a corsetry store in Melbourne, providing Gandel with early exposure to the retail industry.
Rise to Success
In the 1950s, Gandel took control of his parents' women's clothing business, Sussan, transforming it into a prominent player in Australian women's fashion retail. In 1983, he purchased the Chadstone Shopping Centre, which he developed into Australia's largest shopping mall. His major assets include 50% shares in Chadstone, and a 17% stake in the listed Vicinity Centres. Gandel's business ventures have established him as a leading figure in the Australian property development sector.
Key Business Strategies
Gandel's success is attributed to identifying and capitalizing on opportunities within the retail and real estate markets. He expanded the Sussan clothing chain before transitioning to property, where he focused on acquiring and developing shopping centers. His key strategy involved investing in prime real estate and continually expanding and improving these assets, most notably Chadstone Shopping Centre. Gandel also invested in other property companies, including Charter Hall.
Philanthropy
John Gandel, along with his wife Pauline, established Gandel Philanthropy in 1978. Gandel Philanthropy supports a wide range of charitable causes. Over the years, the organization has channeled over $200 million towards supporting various charitable causes in the community, with a focus on Jewish and Australian causes. Notable contributions include support for Holocaust education programs and the establishment of the Gandel Institute for Adult Jewish Learning at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
