Early Life
Drayton McLane Jr. was born on July 22, 1936, in Cameron, Texas. His father, Drayton McLane Sr., owned a wholesale grocery distribution center. Drayton Jr. began working for the family business at the age of nine. He graduated from C.H. Yoe High School in 1954. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1958 and a Master of Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1959.
Rise to Success
After graduating, McLane returned to work for his father. In 1964, he became the president and CEO of McLane Company. During his tenure, he moved the company from Cameron to Temple to take advantage of the central location for distribution. Under his leadership, the company grew from a small family business into a $19 billion enterprise. McLane averaged yearly sales growth of 30% during his leadership. McLane also served as the Vice-Chairman of Walmart after selling McLane Company to Sam Walton in 1991.

McLane's key business strategies focused on leveraging computer technology to streamline grocery distribution. He expanded the company's operations, building eighteen distribution centers across the United States. His strong relationship with Sam Walton and Walmart was critical to the McLane Company's growth. He sold the McLane Company to Walmart in 1991 and became vice-chairman, highlighting his successful business acumen. After the sale, he founded the McLane Group, a holding company with a wide array of investments.
