Early Life
Reed Hastings was born on October 8, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father, Wilmot Reed Hastings Sr., was an attorney, and his mother, Joan Amory Loomis, was a debutante. Hastings attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later graduated from Bowdoin College in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. After college, he served in the Peace Corps, teaching math in Swaziland from 1983 to 1985.
Rise to Success
After his time in the Peace Corps, Hastings earned a Master of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1988. He then founded Pure Software in 1991, which he took public before selling it in 1997. In 1997, Hastings co-founded Netflix with Marc Randolph. Initially, Netflix was a DVD rental service that later transitioned into a streaming giant. Hastings served as CEO of Netflix for 25 years, stepping down in 2023 to become the Executive Chairman.

Hastings' leadership at Netflix was marked by several key strategies, including a subscription-based model with no late fees, which disrupted the traditional video rental industry. He emphasized a strong corporate culture, fostering transparency and flexibility for employees. Hastings also spearheaded Netflix's move into original programming, producing hits like "House of Cards".
Philanthropy
Hastings is also known for his significant philanthropic endeavors, particularly in education. He and his wife, Patricia Ann Quillin, have donated extensively to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and other educational initiatives.
