Early Life
Erwin Franz Müller was born on September 8, 1932, in Munich, Germany. He completed his training as a hairdresser in 1947 and passed his master craftsman exam in 1957. His entrepreneurial journey began with a small hairdressing salon.
Rise to Success
In 1953, Müller opened his first hairdressing salon in Unterfahlheim, near Ulm. His business expanded in 1966 with a branch in Ulm-Braunland, which included a hairdressing salon, perfumery, and drugstore sales. Müller's innovative approach, such as opening his stores on Mondays despite the regulations, caused him to be excluded from the hairdresser's guild. However, this caught the attention of Hugo Mann, who was building the Wertkauf consumer market chain. Müller opened his first concessionary store in the Wertkauf-Center in Munich, a hairdresser's salon with a drugstore and perfumery section. The first "pure" Müller drugstore was established in 1973 in Ulm-Böfingen. In 1995, Müller acquired the Café Gerbeaud in Budapest. Müller's dedication to the drugstore business, combined with his strategic decisions, led to the company's growth and his substantial wealth.
Key Business Strategies
Müller's key business strategy involved the expansion of his drugstore chain. His stores sell a wide range of products, including health and beauty items, fragrances, stationery, toys, multimedia, household items, and over-the-counter drugs. The chain's success is also attributed to its broad assortment of affordable, high-quality products and convenient online shopping options. The company has maintained steady top-line growth, making it a leading European retailer in its category.
