Early Life and Education
Alexei Kuzmichev was born on October 15, 1962, in Kirov, Russia. He served in the Soviet Army as a radio operator from 1980 to 1982. In 1983, he enrolled in the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, where he met his future business partners, Mikhail Fridman and German Khan.
Rise to Success
Kuzmichev, along with Fridman and Khan, co-founded Alfa Photo in 1988, importing photo chemicals. He later convinced his partners to diversify into export, leading to the establishment of Alfa Eco, which later became the Alfa Group Consortium. In 1991, they founded Alfa-Bank, and later acquired and merged with British Petroleum to create TNK-BP, becoming Russia's third-largest oil producer. He was a stakeholder in VimpelCom, Alfa-Bank, and X5 Retail Group. In March 2013, he sold his stake in energy venture TNK-BP to state-run oil company Rosneft for $2.5 billion.

Key to Kuzmichev's success were his skills in logistics, finance, and relationship-building. He focused on building integrated businesses, including trading and structuring deals. Kuzmichev co-founded the LetterOne Group in 2010. In March 2022, he resigned as a shareholder from Alfa Bank.
