Early Life and Education
Oleg Deripaska was born on January 2, 1968, in Dzerzhinsk, Russia. He grew up in Ust-Labinsk, Krasnodar Krai, and was primarily raised by his grandparents after his father died and his mother, an engineer, had to find work. He excelled in school, showing an early interest in physics and mathematics. Deripaska graduated with honors in physics from Moscow State University in 1993. He later obtained a master's degree in economics from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics in 1996.
Rise to Success
Deripaska's career began in the early 1990s, when he entered the metals trading business. He capitalized on the economic changes following the Soviet Union's collapse and acquired a stake in the Sayanogorsk aluminium smelter. By 1994, he became the general director of the smelter. He founded Sibirsky Aluminium Group in 1997, which merged with Roman Abramovich's Millhouse Capital to create Rusal in 2000. Rusal became one of the world's largest aluminum producers.

Deripaska's business strategies focused on consolidating fragmented aluminum assets through mergers and acquisitions. He expanded his business interests by founding Basic Element in 2001, a diversified industrial holding company. Basic Element encompassed various sectors, including energy, mining, and construction. Philanthropy
Deripaska established the Volnoe Delo Foundation in 1998, which supports various initiatives. The foundation has implemented over 500 charity projects in 50 regions of Russia, focusing on education, science, cultural heritage, and public health.
