James Patrick Kavanaugh was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963. He grew up in a blue-collar family and developed a passion for soccer, playing at St. Louis University and later professionally. Kavanaugh represented the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics and also played in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).

After his athletic career, Kavanaugh co-founded World Wide Technology (WWT) in 1990 with David Steward. Initially a reseller of technology equipment, WWT evolved into a major IT solutions provider. Under Kavanaugh's leadership, WWT has grown significantly, generating approximately $20 billion in annual revenue as of 2024 and employing over 12,000 people.
