James P. (Jim) Kavanaugh was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963. His upbringing was rooted in a blue-collar family where his father worked as a bricklayer, instilling values of hard work and integrity. During his youth, Kavanaugh excelled in soccer, which led to him representing the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Saint Louis University in 1986.

After a brief stint in the Major Indoor Soccer League, Kavanaugh transitioned to the business world. In 1990, he co-founded World Wide Technology (WWT) with David Steward.
