Early Life
Mikhail Safarbekovich Gutseriev was born on March 9, 1958, in Akmolinsk, Kazakh SSR, into a large Ingush family. His family experienced displacement, being exiled to Kazakhstan. Gutseriev completed his secondary education in Grozny, Checheno-Ingushskaya ASSR. He holds degrees from several institutions, including the Dzhambul Technological Institute of Light and Food Industry, the Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation, and Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. He also has graduate degrees from Saint Petersburg University of Law and a Ph.D. from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
Rise to Success
Gutseriev's career began in the industrial sector. In 1991, he was elected Chairman of the Businessmen Association of Checheno-Ingush ASSR. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Gutseriev moved to Moscow and founded the industrial and financial company BIN (Bank of Investments and Innovations). In 2002, he established RussNeft, which developed into a major oil company. Gutseriev also served in the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.
