Early Life and Education
Manoj Kumar Upadhyay's early education was in Kolkata. He holds a Diploma in Electronics Engineering from Government Polytechnic, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Rise to Success
Upadhyay began his career in 1995, working for the German telecom power company Benning. He quickly rose to become the technical head of the company's India operations. In 1997, he returned to India to start his own venture. His entrepreneurial journey began in 1999 when he identified a market need for lightning surge protection systems for telecom sites. This led to the founding of Adhunik Power Systems (APS), which provided power protection and management services. By 2002, APS had a turnover of Rs 300 million.
In January 2003, Upadhyay launched ACME, driven by ambition and a desire to make an impact. The ACME Group initially focused on energy management solutions for mobile phone towers and later pivoted to solar energy in 2008. Upadhyay built his first solar plant in Gujarat, driven by the need to move away from thermal energy. His vision was to build the “Next-Generation Utility.”
Key Business Strategies
ACME Group, under Upadhyay's leadership, became a key player in the global renewable energy market. Strategic partnerships and expansions helped solidify his status as a major tycoon in the industry. A significant portion of his wealth comes from his and his wife's 83.4% stake in Acme Solar Holdings Ltd., which specializes in building and operating solar power plants. Upadhyay's focus is on innovation in green technologies, including renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and green ammonia.
Philanthropy
While a specific amount wasn't found, he actively supports emerging start-ups, helping them scale and achieve their potential.
