Early Life
Kristo Käärmann was born in Estonia during the Soviet era and developed an early interest in technology, learning to code on a ZX Spectrum and Commodore. This fascination led him to pursue degrees in mathematics and computer science at the University of Tartu. After graduating, he worked in management consulting, gaining experience at PwC and Deloitte.
Rise to Success
Käärmann's career took a pivotal turn when he experienced the high costs and unfavorable exchange rates of international money transfers, leading him to co-found Wise (formerly TransferWise) with Taavet Hinrikus in 2011. The company was created to address the inefficiencies and hidden fees in traditional banking. Under Käärmann's leadership, Wise has grown exponentially, expanding its services and reaching millions of customers across 170 countries.
Key Business Strategies
Wise's success stems from its transparent pricing model, competitive exchange rates, and technology-driven approach. Käärmann focused on providing a faster, cheaper, and more transparent alternative to traditional banks for international money transfers. Wise's strategy has been to focus on cross-border flows, developer-friendly integrations and multi-currency account features aimed at people and companies that regularly transact internationally. In Q1 2024, 62% of all Wise transfers were instant, meaning they were completed in under 20 seconds, up from 55% in Q1 2023.
Philanthropy
While specific philanthropy amounts aren't readily available, Käärmann and his team have organized an open tech school in the Estonian language for children being homeschooled, inspiring the next generation of tech enthusiasts.
