Early Life and Education
Kristo Käärmann was born and raised in Estonia during the Soviet era. His early interest in technology began with a ZX Spectrum computer in the early 90s. He pursued higher education, earning a BSc and MSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Tartu in 2002.
Career and the Genesis of Wise
Käärmann's career started in management consulting, working at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Deloitte. At Deloitte, he focused on the implementation of financial systems and actuarial modeling. His experience highlighted inefficiencies in traditional banking, which inspired him to seek a better solution for cross-border money transfers. This led him to co-found TransferWise (later Wise) with Taavet Hinrikus in 2011.
Rise to Success with Wise
Wise revolutionized international money transfers by offering a transparent and affordable alternative to traditional banks. Under Käärmann's leadership, Wise expanded its services, attracting millions of customers and growing into a global fintech leader. Wise went public on the London Stock Exchange in 2021. Käärmann and Hinrikus became Estonia's first billionaires as a result of Wise's success.
Key Business Strategies
Wise's success is attributed to its peer-to-peer system, offering real exchange rates, and low fees, which challenged established financial norms. The company focused on transparency and efficiency, leading to rapid growth and customer adoption. Käärmann has overseen the expansion of Wise into multiple markets and the development of various products, including multi-currency accounts and debit cards.
Controversies
In 2021, Käärmann was included on a list of individuals receiving penalties for a deliberate default regarding their tax affairs, for which he received a fine.
