Early Life and Education
Julio César Ponce Lerou was born on November 13, 1945, in La Calera, Valparaíso Region, Chile. He attended the prestigious Internado Nacional Barros Arana in Santiago. He studied medicine at the University of Concepción for a year before finishing his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Chile.

His position allowed him to acquire significant influence over the privatization of Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile (SQM). He led a group of investors who bought up SQM shares at what some considered bargain rates.
