Early Life
Jean Eric Salata was born on December 22, 1965, in Chile. At the age of five, he moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. Salata began investing in the stock market at a young age, around 12 or 13. He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1984 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988, graduating magna cum laude.
Rise to Success
After graduating from Wharton, Salata worked for Bain & Company in Boston and Hong Kong, advising foreign companies on strategies for entering the Mainland China market. In 1991, he joined the investment arm of AIG. In 1997, he became the head of the Asian unit of Baring Private Equity Partners, which later became BPEA. Under his leadership, BPEA grew significantly. In 2000, he completed a management buyout of BPEA, making the firm independent. In October 2022, Salata sold BPEA to EQT, forming BPEA EQT, which significantly increased his net worth.
