Early Life and Education
Kenneth Bryan Dart was born in 1955 in Mason, Michigan. He is the son of William A. Dart, who was the son of William F. Dart, the founder of Dart Manufacturing Company. In 1976, Dart graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Kenneth joined Dart Container Corporation, the family business. He became president of Dart Container in 1986 and later transitioned to the board of directors in 2001. Dart's investment acumen became evident through ventures in sovereign debt, notably in Greece and Argentina, and through substantial holdings in the tobacco sector. He is known for his strategic approach and contrarian investments.
Key Business Strategies
Dart's business strategies have been characterized by a focus on high-value investments. He has invested in distressed sovereign debt, making profits by acquiring bonds at reduced prices. He also built significant positions in the tobacco industry, acquiring stakes in British American Tobacco and Imperial Brands. Dart's strategy involves taking concentrated equity positions and, in certain situations, advocating for minority shareholder rights. Additionally, Dart has invested heavily in real estate development in the Cayman Islands, including the Camana Bay waterfront development.
Philanthropy
Dart, through the Dart Foundation and Kenneth B. Dart Foundation, supports various causes including conservation, crisis relief, community services, and STEM education. The Dart Foundation has granted over $100 million to support change at the local level.
