Early Life
John T. Dorrance III, often known as "Ippy," was born in Pennsylvania in either 1943 or 1944. He is the son of John T. "Jack" Dorrance Jr. and the grandson of John Thompson Dorrance, who invented the condensed soup process, transforming the Campbell Soup Company into a global leader. Dorrance's upbringing was influenced by his family's wealth and connections to the food industry. Following his parents' divorce in 1963, he relocated to Switzerland with his mother.
Rise to Success
Dorrance entered the business world through private ventures, initially managing an 18,000-acre ranch in Wyoming focused on cattle ranching. He later became involved in family-related enterprises, serving as an officer of the trust that held Campbell Soup Company stock for himself, his brother, and his sister. In 1995, he acquired Irish citizenship and moved to Dublin. He sold his Campbell Soup shares in 1996.
Key Business Strategies
Dorrance's key business move was the sale of his Campbell Soup shares, a well-timed decision before the stock declined. This allowed him to maintain his billionaire status through investments, which have since benefited from market growth. His move to Ireland was also likely motivated by tax considerations.
Philanthropy
John Dorrance III is associated with the Dorrance Family Foundation, founded by his brother Bennett Dorrance. The foundation supports projects related to natural resources, conservancy, sustainable agriculture, and animal welfare, with a focus on Arizona and Hawaii.
