Early Life
John Collison was born in Limerick, Ireland, in August 1990. He grew up in the small village of Dromineer in County Tipperary. Collison's parents, Denis and Lily Collison, fostered his curiosity in technology from a young age. He and his brother Patrick were fascinated by math and physics, and had nine computers at home in their early teens. Collison attended Castletroy College in Ireland and then enrolled at Harvard University in 2009, but he dropped out after about a year to focus on Stripe.
Rise to Success
In 2010, John and his brother Patrick co-founded Stripe in Palo Alto, California. Stripe aimed to simplify online payments for businesses. The company received backing from notable investors like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and Sequoia Capital. The Collison brothers' early venture, Auctomatic, provided them with valuable experience in e-commerce and the challenges associated with online transactions. Stripe quickly gained traction, becoming a key player in the fintech industry. John became the youngest self-made billionaire in 2016.
Key Business Strategies
Stripe's success is attributed to its user-friendly platform, developer-focused approach, and ability to provide a seamless payment experience. The company's focus on innovation and strategic partnerships has fueled its growth. By 2024, Stripe processed $1.4 trillion in total payment volume.
Philanthropy
In 2018, Stripe, under the direction of the Collison brothers, contributed $1 million to California YIMBY, a pro-housing development lobbying organization. Collison also has been involved in investments in carbon removal initiatives through Stripe. He has also invested in restoring historic properties.
