Early Life
John A. Pritzker was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1953. He is the son of Jay Pritzker and Marian "Cindy" Friend. He is a member of the wealthy Pritzker family, known for their various business ventures and philanthropic efforts. Pritzker graduated from Menlo College with a B.A. and attended the University of Denver.
Rise to Success
Pritzker's career began in 1972 at Hyatt Hotels, the family business. He advanced to Managing Director and Divisional Vice President in 1984. In 1988, he left Hyatt to pursue entrepreneurial activities. In 1996, he founded Mandara Spa, a chain of resort spas. He sold 40% of Mandara Spa to Shiseido Co. in 2000 and the remaining 60% to Steiner Leisure Limited in 2001.
In 2005, Pritzker co-founded the private equity firm Geolo Capital with Tom Gottlieb. Geolo Capital focused on investments in hospitality, entertainment, and health & wellness companies. In 2009, Geolo Capital bought the Carmel Valley Ranch from Blackstone, reimagining the resort. Soon after, they purchased a majority interest in the Joie de Vivre boutique hotel chain. In 2011, Pritzker merged the Joie de Vivre chain with the Thompson Hotel Group to form Commune Hotels & Resorts. In 2018, Hyatt Hotels purchased Two Roads Hospitality, which included Commune Hotels, for $408 million.
Philanthropy
John Pritzker is actively involved in philanthropy, serving on the boards of various organizations, including the John Pritzker Family Fund, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at UCSF, the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Executive Council of UCSF Health, the Bernard Osher Foundation, and the Emeritus Board of Tipping Point Community. He is also a past president of the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation. In 2025, Pritzker donated 188 Dada and Surrealist works by 37 artists to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
