Early Life
Jack Lynn Cockwell was born on January 12, 1941, in East London, South Africa. He received his Master of Commerce degree from the University of Cape Town in 1964 and completed a postgraduate program there in 1966.
Rise to Success
In 1968, he was recruited by the Bronfman family to work for Edper Investments. He made bold acquisitions with Edper Investments and constructed a vast conglomerate that included real estate, resource firms, and financial companies. The conglomerate eventually became Brookfield Asset Management. Cockwell served as President and CEO of Brookfield and orchestrated the merger of Edper and Brascan to form Brookfield Corporation in 1997. He retired as President and CEO of Brookfield in 2002 but remains a director.

He has contributed significantly to educational institutions like Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and George Brown College. He has also been involved in conservation efforts, leading the efforts of a wildlife reserve in central Ontario for nearly three decades. In 2024, he donated $10 million to Toronto Metropolitan University.
