Early Life
George Leon Argyros was born on February 4, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. His family moved to Pasadena, California, when he was 11. He is a second-generation American citizen with grandparents who emigrated from Greece.
Rise to Success
Argyros's journey to success began with humble beginnings. As a senior in high school, he worked as a grocery department manager to pay for his education at Chapman University. He graduated in 1959 with a degree in business and economics. After graduation, Argyros invested in real estate and opened his own brokerage office in 1963. In 1968, he founded Arnel & Affiliates, a real estate company that became the cornerstone of his wealth. From 1981 to 1989, he owned the Seattle Mariners baseball team.

Argyros made his fortune through real estate investments, buying and selling properties. His business strategy involved acquiring and managing commercial and residential properties. Arnel & Affiliates, the primary vehicle for his real estate ventures, owns approximately 5,500 apartments and nearly 2 million square feet of commercial real estate.
Philanthropy
Argyros and his wife, Julia, are well-known philanthropists. Their family foundation has awarded 450 individual grants totaling over $126 million since 2020. Their philanthropic efforts include significant donations to Chapman University, Hoag Hospital, and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In 2024, the family donated $15 million to Hoag’s Julia Argyros Center for Nursing Excellence.
