Early Life
Pham Nhat Vuong was born on August 5, 1968, in Hanoi, North Vietnam. His father served in the Vietnamese Army's air defense division, and his mother ran a tea shop. Vuong graduated from Kim Lien High School in 1985. He pursued higher education at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology before being sent to the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute in the Soviet Union, where he graduated in 1992.
Rise to Success
Vuong's entrepreneurial journey began in the early 1990s in Ukraine, where he started an instant noodle business. This venture, named Technocom, became incredibly popular, especially with the "Mivina" brand of instant noodles, and was sold to Nestlé for $150 million in 2009. Vuong returned to Vietnam and established Vingroup. His initial projects in Vietnam were Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang (opened in 2003) and Vincom City Towers in Hanoi (opened in 2004).
Key Business Strategies
Vuong's business strategy emphasizes a "Five Principles" approach: centralization, standardization, simplification, automation, and sharing. These principles have guided Vingroup's expansion into various sectors. VinFast, Vingroup's automotive arm, has quickly grown to become Vietnam's largest EV maker, and has plans for factories in the U.S., India, and Indonesia. In 2023, VinFast went public through a SPAC listing on Nasdaq.
Philanthropy
Vuong and his wife co-founded the VinFuture Foundation in 2020, which supports breakthroughs in science and technology. In 2020 and 2021, he was named one of the 15 "Heroes of Philanthropy in the Asia-Pacific region".
