Early Life
Joseph Chung-Hsin Tsai was born in January 1964, in Taipei, Taiwan. His father, Paul C. Tsai, was a lawyer and the first person from Taiwan to receive a J.S.D. degree from Yale Law School. At age 13, Joseph moved to the United States to attend the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
Rise to Success
Tsai earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and East Asian Studies from Yale University in 1986 and a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1990. He began his career as a tax associate at Sullivan & Cromwell. In 1995, he moved to Hong Kong and joined Investor AB as a private equity investor. In 1999, Tsai met Jack Ma and joined Alibaba as a founding member, taking on the role of CFO. He played a crucial role in establishing Alibaba's financial and legal structure. He became executive vice chairman in 2013 and chairman in 2023.

Tsai was instrumental in Alibaba's growth, helping secure early venture capital and playing a key role in its global expansion and strategic planning. He has held various leadership positions within the company, contributing to its success. Tsai's legal and financial expertise was critical in the early stages of Alibaba. In 2024, Tsai became the second-largest individual shareholder of Alibaba after Jack Ma.

Tsai is a known philanthropist, along with his wife, Clara Wu Tsai, supports various initiatives in education, medical research, social justice, and civil rights. They have supported social justice and economic mobility, especially for the Black community.
