Early Life and Education
Joseph Chung-Hsin Tsai was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in January 1964. At age 13, he moved to the United States to attend the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, where he excelled in both lacrosse and football. Tsai then enrolled at Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and East Asian studies in 1986. He furthered his education by earning a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1990.
Rise to Success
After law school, Tsai began his career at Sullivan & Cromwell before transitioning to private equity. In 1995, he moved to Hong Kong to work for Investor AB, managing Asian private equity investments. His career took a pivotal turn in 1999 when he met Jack Ma and joined Alibaba as a founding member. He played a crucial role in establishing Alibaba's financial and legal structure, and held various executive positions including chief operating officer and chief financial officer. He became executive vice chairman in May 2013 and chairman in September 2023.

Tsai's strategic contributions have been critical to Alibaba's growth. He established the financial and legal frameworks that enabled Alibaba to become a global e-commerce giant. Tsai and his wife, Clara Wu Tsai, are active philanthropists. Through the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, they support various initiatives, including education, research, and social justice. Their philanthropic efforts include donations to Yale University, the Lawrenceville School, and various social justice causes. The couple launched the Social Justice Fund in 2020, committing $50 million over ten years to address racial and economic disparities in Brooklyn, New York.
