Early Life and Career
Xiang Guangda was born in 1958 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China, into a working-class family. He began his career in 1980 as a mechanic in a state-run fishery company, eventually becoming the director of the company's workshop. In 1986, he and his relatives started a workshop that manufactured car windows and doors.
Rise to Success
In 1988, Xiang left his job at the state-owned firm to become a full-time entrepreneur, raising the equivalent of around $100,000 from friends and relatives to fund their business. He founded Tsingshan Holding Group in 1988. The company's success is attributed to its focus on specialization, which propelled its growth in the steelmaking industry.
Key Business Strategies
Tsingshan pioneered the use of cheaper nickel pig iron in place of metallic nickel in its stainless steel production and implemented the use of the rotary kiln furnace for continuous production. Xiang also invested in nickel mines in Indonesia during the 2000s. Under Xiang's leadership, Tsingshan became the world's largest producer of ferro-nickel and the second-largest manufacturer of stainless steel. The company expanded its operations with production plants in Indonesia, India, and Zimbabwe.
